Is this an attack on our city council members? No!  This initiative will not take effect until voted on by Whittier residents.  It allows all current council members to run for office for another 12 years.  This initiative aims to increase civic engagement and increase voter turnout. 

Why doesn't the city council put the measure on the ballot themselves? Our organization met with all council members, except Fernando Dutra.  All council members refused to put the initiative on the ballot themselves.  Doing so, would have saved Whittier a lot of taxpayer money and would have given Whittier residents the opportunity to decide for themselves.
